History and OverviewMission Housing America Corporation is a non-profit organization "dedicated to improving communities in the area it serves by providing decent, safe and affordable housing through education and economic opportunity to very low-, low- and moderate-income individuals and families". History Housing America Corporation was founded in 1976, with the objective to address the need of affordable housing in Yuma County and provide opportunities to low income individuals and families to obtain a secure, affordable and safe home. Housing America's first project was Del Pueblo apartments, a 40 unit USDA Rural Development Farm Labor housing complex in Somerton, Arizona. Consequently, Colorado Street Apartments, a 32 unit USDA Rural Development farm labor housing complex was also built in Yuma, Arizona. Throughout the years, several new Multi-Family projects have been integrated. In 1992, Orchid Street Apartments Farm Labor Housing was built with 16 units and located in Somerton, Arizona. In 2000, Amistad Apartments, a Low Income Housing Tax Credit property was built with 24 units located in Somerton, Arizona. Housing America Corp. is the proud sponsor of two new Non-Profit Organizations; Harrison Haven located in Kingman, Arizona. Harrison Haven consists of 56 elderly apartment units; Valle Del Desierto in Somerton, Arizona consists of 44 elderly apartments units. Harrison Haven was opened in January 2008 and Valle Del Desierto was opened in February of 2009. Both projects were constructed with (HUD) US Department of Housing Urban Development funding, which means rents are subsidized by the HUD for very low income seniors 62 years and older. In 1981, the Self-Help Program was incorporated to continue building on the vision of providing affordable housing and making homeownership available to low income individuals and families. Families who participate in this program make a commitment to work in a group setting with other families, on the construction of each of their houses. The program is funded by US Department of Agriculture Rural Development. In 1995, Yuma County Housing Development formally changed its name to Housing America and expanded its services to Mohave County by opening a satellite office in Kingman, AZ. The Homeownership Education and Counseling program was created in 1997 providing education and counseling to first time homebuyers. The Homeownership Education and Counseling program administers down payment and closing costs funds through the Arizona Department of Housing, the Homes for Arizonans Initiative until June 30, 2009. Most recently, three new programs started through the Arizona Department of Housing - "Your Way Home for Arizona" the "MCC Plus" (Mortgage Credit Certificate) and the "MRB" (Mortgage Revenue Bond). On May 2006 the Pre-Purchase and Post-Purchase Counseling services were integrated to expand the homeownership programs. Housing America Corporation main goals of these counseling services are to increase homeownership retention and increase the opportunity for families and individuals to become homeowners.
